"For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT)
The Lord has a purpose and plan for every people group. God's original intent for America, home to hundreds of indigenous sovereign nations, was freedom, liberty, and Covenant. Many immigrants came to America fleeing religious persecution in their native countries and others came to extend the Christian faith. When the expedition of 1607 led by Pastor Robert Hunt arrived on the shores of Cape Henry, they planted a cross and covenanted America to the Lord. Parallel to biblical history, the newcomers soon became sidetracked with the wealth of the land. Indigenous people were regarded as "savage and heathen" without regard that they knew Creator God and worshipped Him. Consequently, initial covenants made in good faith were broken and countless trails of tears followed as indigenous people were forcibly removed from their homelands.
But there was one man who took a different approach, William Penn. Penn, the son of a British Admiral, was born and raised in nobility. Because of his encounters with Jesus, he experienced a dramatic conversion and became a Quaker. This decision led him to embrace his heavenly Father's vision for his life, costing Penn his inheritance, his reputation, his freedom (for a time), and his relationship with his earthly father (eventually restored). His relationship with God caused him to say, "Let us try what love will do," in response to those who labeled the indigenous people of Pennsylvania, Penn's newly granted land, as "savages." For the duration of his life, William Penn modeled the power of that love in his covenantal relationship with Chief Tamanend of the Lenape (chief of the Turtle clan and council chief of the three clans). Penn desired that Pennsylvania would be a "holy experiment," the seed of a new nation where relationships between all men were built on biblical principles of faith and good will and expressed through mutual trust and oneness of heart with one another and God. So powerful were Penn's contributions to the foundation of America's original framework that Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Declaration of Independence, called him "the greatest lawgiver the world has produced." For the duration of his earthly life, the holy experiment worked, and Pennsylvania became known as “the birthplace of the nation.”
The love that William Penn embraced, proclaimed, and lived, was and still is, God's original intent for all people. Our desire, at the 2023 USA Watch Summit, strategically situated in Philadelphia, PA (“America's womb”), is to honor the covenantal love William Penn and Chief Tamanend of the Lenape tribe shared, bring understanding and alignment where needed, and foster nation-transforming rebirth and reformation.
We invite you to join us for a time of worship and contending for God's original purpose and intention for America. For such a time as this, we were born. Click here to register for the USA Watch Summit.
